Setting
Records in Peterborough The new Peterborough Community Church facility is setting
records and B&H Syscom has played an important technical
role. For several years B&H worked to help clarify the vision of
the church and where they want to go technically.
Now complete, this is the largest church complex in
Peterborough, and it has the largest stage and projection
screen installed in any UK church. Unusually for a church, a
rock ‘n’ roll type sound system has been installed with flown
Meyer line array speakers and a Digico D5 desk out front. The
video projection system includes a pair of 12000 lumen Barco
projectors with soft-edged blending to produce stunning
images.
Church Technical Director Peter Charlton said, ‘Importantly
it’s a relationship based situation with B&H, working with
someone you can trust, knowing that primarily they have your
best interests at heart.
B&H have been fully
supportive and the
results are great.’
Peterborough
Community Church
began in a front room
18 years ago and has
now progressed to its
own purpose built
building which will
ultimately seat 1800 –
a dynamic record for
growth. |

Under
the Stars Sitting on hay bales, 400 people literally watched
‘Under the Stars’, a spectacular enactment of the
nativity featuring real animals. B&H Sound Services
technically facilitated this outdoor musical extravaganza
in the beautiful grounds of Mulberry House, Essex,
which included two school choirs and a Salvation Army
brass band.
BBC Essex
radio presenters
told the story as
if it were
breaking news.
Technical
challenges
included coping
with the cold
wintry night,
pre-recording
the special effects and sequencing them for the BBC
broadcast. The PA and lighting had to cover all the
different performance areas and be effective for the
widespread audience.
The BBC radio programme was broadcast to an
audience of up to 350,000 people across the county.
Mulberry House Hospitality & Promotions Manager Ruth
Morey said, ‘The B&H team was polite, well organised,
professional and competent and far exceeded my
expectations on the day. I valued their input, advice
and attention to detail. Their support and
accommodating nature contributed to the success of
this live nativity event.’ |

More
than Fair Weather Friends
As the largest garden centre in the UK, Webbs of Wychbold
needs more than fair weather friends which is why they
used B&H Syscom to achieve excellent sound coverage throughout
their complex.
A system had to be designed for both background music
and advertising. A series of 100 volt speakers combined
with custom made brackets achieved 360° coverage of the
indoor shopping area. Adjoining conference rooms posed
a challenge, requiring independent audio systems yet with
flexibility to be used together when the partition between
them was removed. The solution was to use an audio router
to select different inputs as required.
Jim Ward Editorial Director of Garden Media (TGCMC Ltd)
noted, ‘B&H did a brilliant job and everyone is absolutely
delighted. We are even planning to take people on site
to show them how great Garden Radio can sound with such
excellent equipment and installation.’
Outdoor audio equipment has been suitably weather protected
to ensure excellent results ‘come rain or shine’. |

| Spitalfields
Market – Alright on the night!
A thriving market is always good fun, and combining B&H
Sound Services’ technology with the distinctive atmosphere
produced a great result. The live relay of their large
scale closing night concert was a first for the popular
Spitalfields Festival.
The classical music was performed by the BBC Symphony
Orchestra at Shoreditch Church a mile from the market.
B&H relayed the sights and sounds to Spitalfields using
a digital microwave link system, enabling perfect clarity
in spite of the fact that there was not a clear path between
the two venues. The evening broadcast was relayed with
PA and large screen projection to enable diners at the
outdoor cafés to enjoy the music.
Kate Wyatt, Spitalfields Festival
Events Director said ‘B&H Sound
Services clearly had the knowledge,
skills and expertise to overcome the
inevitable challenges. They gave me
confidence that everything would be
alright on the night – which it was!
The evening went without a hitch; the
audience, market staff and sponsors
were all delighted.’

Brass
Band Tradition
It’s worth crossing the Atlantic for! The Brass
Band of Central Florida recently visited UK,
participating in events like Brass in Concert. Their
enthusiasm for the British brass band tradition
led them to record a CD using B&H Sound
Services with Director Brian Hillson who has
extensive brass band experience.
The venue was the 18th century Crowland
Abbey in Lincolnshire, which proved ideal.
Encouraged by Conductor Michael Garasi and the
enthusiastic band members, Brian Hillson ably
interspersed takes with observations about the
ensemble, general balance and other elements.
He noted, ‘There was a palpable sense of youthful
enjoyment coming from the players and I think
this can be felt when listening to the recording.’
Michael Garasi said, ‘The sound we were able
to achieve was a real thrill and an experience
that we will always remember.’ This Egon CD
will be available for enthusiasts on both sides of
the pond. |

Well-travelled
Microphones From
the Hilversum National Broadcasting Centre in Holland
to the Wellington Town Hall in New Zealand, being well
travelled has advantages.
When the Recording Department
of B&H Sound Services captures the sounds of numerous
orchestras, choirs, military and brass bands in many
diverse venues, they use a wide selection of quality
microphones.
Our B&H Recording Engineer/Producer explains,
‘Due to the difficulty of sourcing professional microphones
when abroad, we have just built a special protective
case for carrying the microphones aboard airplanes.
All in all, we must have some of the most well-travelled
microphones around!’ |
